That Ole Devil Covid

Well, that Ole Devil Covid got a holt of us'uns on our journey to cooler climes for a few weeks this summer. Being careful and being careful and being careful don't cut it any more.

Covid virus is working to make itself part of  human DNA, like other viruses. Some say the viruses are mankind's worst enemy. We have no idea, only speculations, as to where we got it. Supposition says it might have been a small overcrowded restaurant in a very small town in Western Maryland where we were staying with friends. No one of our hosts tested positive in the week following the  "immaculate exposure".

Early viral experts, pundits, optimists and self styled experts theorized we would gain "herd immunity". That still ain't gonna' make that ole Devil Covid Virus go away. Got a feeling a Covid shot like the Flu shot is going to be a regular part of our lives.

Them Ole Covids ( a term borrowed from a wise old philosopher from Madison County, Georgia.) is sneaky and works day and night to reinvent itself by using us. George Carlin quipped, "Humans are just a way of transferring water from one place to another". Seems like Covid uses the same tactic.

We humans can't sit still; we HAVE travel anywhere to embrace our friends, in-laws, outlaws and kinlin. Slobbering on grandchildren, and other loved ones is a God given right. We will go to any lengths, it seems, to eat at the table with Mama and Nem on any holiday.

Sharing is a ritual with humans. Food, clothes, kisses, hugs, hand shakes, hugs, coughs and sneezes are just a few way we "spread" ourselves around.  We just like each others company until we don't...then we go to arguing, yelling at one another at ball games, town hall meetings, schools, and offices. Covid loves us to do all those things.

We tried the experiment of "virtual learning" for our children 's safety, and the same for virtual work from home. It produced a desired effect, I think. It protected children, and workers alike. I think the lesson is that children, like adults  are more prone to sponging up ideas and concepts in group situations in schools and offices. I don't think it was a bad idea as an alternative to keeping as many as possible out of the throes of Covid. Many disagree, that's a personal observation. I stayed at the end of my long dirt road during the thick of things.

So, my wife and I have the merit badge. Been there done that ticked it off, for good and forever, I hope. We went, we got, we survived, thanks to vaccination, boosters and having a fine place on the beautiful Greenbrier River in WV to isolate ourselves to keep from spreading. Although a bit scary to see a positive on a test strip and have it confirmed by the Doc in the Box.

So, what does one do during a Covid Vacation? I played mandolin, guitar, re-learned the words to lot of songs, got my finger callouses back and the rust off my vocal chords and the guitar strings. Janice read, slept, read some more and we both had a very good "Covid Vacation".

One thing did not change. Rule # 602 in Volume 2 of the Laws of the Universe states:
" If you leave home for a vacation for any length of time, it takes double that time to catch up with what you didn't do at work or home while your were on vacation".

Stay well, and be aware them Ole Covids, like Old Man Interest, and Ole Man Rent work 24 hrs. a day. This ain't over and Ole Man Winter is coming.
